ASIAD 2026: Vietnam beat Thailand to defend women’s Sepak Takraw gold
VOV.VN - Vietnam defeated Thailand 2-1 in a thrilling women’s quadrant final at ASIAD 2026 on October 3, successfully defending the gold medal won in Sepak Takraw at the previous Asian Games.
The Vietnamese team prevailed 15-11, 15-17, 15-11 in the final at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Gymnasium in Nagoya, Japan, securing Vietnam’s third gold medal at this year’s Asian Games.
The victory was particularly significant as Thailand are a powerhouse in Sepak Takraw, and the two teams had already met in the group stage, when Vietnam also recorded a 2-0 victory.
Vietnam made a confident start to the final, taking an early 5-1 lead in the opening set. The combination of Tran Thi Ngoc Yen and Nguyen Thi Yen produced a series of effective attacks, while the team’s defensive organisation helped keep Thailand under pressure.
Vietnam maintained their advantage to take the first set 15-11. Ngoc Yen was particularly effective in attack, while captain Nguyen Thi My was also introduced to share the serving and defensive duties.
Thailand responded strongly in the second set. The two sides traded points in a closely fought battle, with Vietnam coming close to closing out the match before Thailand took the set 17-15 to level the final at 1-1.
The deciding set was again tightly contested, but Vietnam kept their composure at the crucial moments. They eventually prevailed 15-11 to secure the 2-1 victory and retain their Asian Games title in the sport.
The Vietnamese lineup in the final included Nguyen Thi My, Tran Thi Ngoc Yen, Nguyen Thi Yen and Nguyen Thi Ngoc Huyen, with Hoang Thi Thu Thao and Le Ngoc Tuyet also part of the squad.
The gold medal is Vietnam’s third at ASIAD 2026. The country had previously won gold in women’s team Kata in Karate and women’s doubles in Sepak Takraw.
Vietnam had already made history earlier in the Games after overwhelming the Philippines in the Sepak Takraw doubles final on September 29, winning gold.
The women’s quadrant gold therefore gives Vietnam a second Sepak Takraw title at ASIAD 2026 and confirms the team’s continued strength in the sport.
For the quadrant event, the result also means Vietnam successfully defended the title won at ASIAD 19 in Hangzhou in 2022 when they defeated Indonesia 2-1 in that final.
