ASIAD 2026: Vietnam claims second gold with women's sepak takraw victory
VOV.VN - Vietnam has secured its second gold medal at the 20th Asian Games (ASIAD 2026) in Japan after Nguyen Thi Thu Trang and Nguyen Thi Khanh Ly defeated their Philippine opponents in the women’s doubles Sepak Takraw final in Nagoya on September 29.
Thu Trang and Khanh Ly quickly established a comfortable lead in the opening set against Jean Marie Sucalit and Abegail Sinogbuhan, with Thu Trang providing solid defensive play and Khanh Ly finishing points effectively. Vietnam maintained control in the second set, winning 15-4 to wrap up the match in straight sets.
The victory capped a strong comeback for the Vietnamese pair at the Games. They suffered a 1-2 defeat to Laos in their opening group match but recovered with wins over Myanmar and Malaysia before beating the Republic of Korea 2-0 in the semifinal.
The gold also adds to an impressive run for Thu Trang and Khanh Ly. In August, the pair won the women's doubles title at the 2026 King's Cup in Bangkok after beating Myanmar 2-0 in the final. That victory marked Vietnam's first gold medal in the women's doubles at the tournament.
Sepak Takraw has continued to be one of Vietnam's strongest medal prospects at the Asian Games. At the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, the Vietnamese women's four-player team won gold, while the women's Sepak Takraw squad also secured the country's second gold medal of those Games.
The women's doubles gold is Vietnam's second at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, following the women's team kata title in karate won by Bui Ngoc Nhi, Hoang Thi Thu Uyen and Nguyen Ngoc Tram on September 22.
With the women’s doubles victory, Vietnam’s medal tally rose to two golds, one silver and 17 bronzes. The Vietnamese delegation is targeting at least four gold medals at the 20th Asian Games in Japan.
