Karate fighters bring first gold medal for Vietnam at ASIAD 20
VOV.VN - Vietnam claimed their first gold medal at ASIAD 2026 after Nguyen Ngoc Tram, Bui Ngoc Nhi and Hoang Thi Thu Uyen beat Iran in the women’s team kata final on September 22.
The gold medal was secured by the women’s team kata trio following their 5-0 win over Iranian opponents at Toyohashi Gymnasium, Japan.
The trio entered the gold-medal bout after defeating Chinese Taipei 5-0 in the semi-finals. In the final, they performed Tomari Bassai, while Iran presented Papuren.
The five-member judging panel awarded the Iranian team 8.4, 7.9, 8.4, 7.6, and 8.3 points, respectively. The Vietnamese team received scores of 8.8, 8.2, 8.8, 8.3, and 8.6 for their performance.
At the 19th Asian Games (ASIAD 19) in Hangzhou in 2023, Nguyen Ngoc Tram won the gold medal in this division alongside Nguyen Thi Phuong and Luu Thi Thu Uyen.
Also, at the ASIAD 20, Bui Ngoc Nhi had previously won the bronze medal in the women's individual kata on September 20.
Her teammate Nguyen Thi Dieu Ly obtained the bronze medal in the women's 68kg Kumite bronze. Nguyen Hoang Minh Tan and Trinh Gia Nghi claimed another bronze medal in mixed doubles Teqball.
So far, the Vietnamese team have bagged one gold and three bronze medals.
