Vietnam's sports delegation secures third medal at ASIAD 2026
VOV.VN - Nguyen Thi Dieu Ly claimed the bronze medal in the women's 68kg Kumite event on September 21, securing the third medal for the Vietnamese sports delegation at the 20th Asian Games (ASIAD 20).
Competing at the Toyohashi Gymnasium in Japan, Dieu Ly faced host nation martial artist Tsubasa Kama in the bronze medal match. The tense encounter ended in a 4-4 draw.
Under Kumite rules, when two competitors finish with equal points, the athlete who scores first wins via the senshu rule. Having scored first, Dieu Ly was awarded the victory to officially claim the bronze medal.
Both competitors started cautiously, spending the opening moments probing each other. Dieu Ly actively moved around, waited for counter-attacking opportunities, and maintained a balanced match against her Japanese opponent.
Tsubasa Kama leveraged home-field advantage to raise the tempo and launch close-range attacks. However, Dieu Ly maintained her focus, responded effectively, and kept the match tightly contested for the majority of the bout.
As time wound down, the two fighters remained deadlocked. The 4-4 score held until the final whistle, forcing officials to apply the senshu rule to determine the winner.
By scoring first, Nguyen Thi Dieu Ly secured the win and the women's 68kg Kumite bronze. This marks the third medal for the Vietnamese sports delegation at ASIAD 2026, following earlier bronze medals won by Nguyen Hoang Minh Tan and Trinh Gia Nghi in mixed doubles Teqball, and Bui Ngoc Nhi in women's individual Kata.
