Karate athlete Bui Ngoc Nhi bags bronze for Vietnam at ASIAD 20
VOV.VN - Karate athlete Bui Ngoc Nhi won bronze in the women’s individual kata at ASIAD 20 on September 20, making her mark on her Asian Games debut.
Ngoc Nhi faced Singapore’s Leong Wai Yee Shannon in the women’s individual kata bronze medal bout. The Vietnamese athlete produced a confident performance to win 4-1 and secure a place on the ASIAD podium.
The bronze medal was the first for Hanoi Sports at ASIAD 20 and the second medal for the Vietnamese sports delegation at the Games, following the bronze won by Nguyen Hoang Minh Tan and Trinh Gia Nghi in teqball mixed doubles.
Ngoc Nhi’s medal journey, however, did not begin with a victory. In her opening bout, the Hanoi athlete faced home favourite Maho Ono of Japan and lost 0-5. The result sent Ngoc Nhi into the repechage, leaving her with little room for error.
She quickly bounced back in her next bout, performing Tomari Bassai to beat Choi Haeun of the Republic of Korea 5-0 and book her place in the bronze medal bout.
In the decisive bout against Leong Wai Yee Shannon, Ngoc Nhi performed Papuren. She received four points from the judges, compared with one for her Singaporean opponent, securing a 4-1 victory and a bronze medal at her first Asian Games.
Vietnamese karate team leader Vu Son Ha praised Ngoc Nhi for maintaining her focus and performing her techniques well in the competition. The athlete is scheduled to compete in the women’s team kata on September 22.
