Vietnam targets 4-6 gold medals as 498-member delegation heads to ASIAD 20
VOV.VN -Vietnam has registered a 498-member delegation, including 349 athletes competing across 214 events in 33 sports, for the 20th Asian Games (ASIAD) in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. The delegation aims to secure four to six gold medals and break into the top 20 overall.
Sports officials have set a target exceeding the three gold medals won at ASIAD 19 in Hangzhou. Core medal expectations rest on five key sports: shooting, sepaktakraw, karate, rowing, and athletics.
Shooting fields 15 marksmen across 18 events targeting one to two gold medals, spearheaded by returning continental and global competitors. Sepaktakraw builds on its previous women's team title and recent international podium finishes, while karate, rowing, and athletics round out the primary contenders. Additional medal potentials span wushu, boxing, taekwondo, gymnastics, weightlifting, and esports.
Beyond the competing athletes, 14 Vietnamese technical officials and referees invited directly by Asian sports federations will officiate across 10 sports at the Games, operating independently of the national delegation.
The multi-sport event officially runs from September 19 to October 4, though several team sports commence prior to the opening ceremony.
The women's football team opens its Group E campaign against Chinese Taipei on September 14, followed by matches against host Japan on September 17 and Thailand on September 21. Meanwhile, the U23 men's football team competes in Group C, facing Kuwait on September 15, the Philippines on September 18, and Uzbekistan on September 20.
The official flag-raising ceremony for quotas is scheduled for September 18.
