Vietnamese athletes given encouragement ahead of ASIAD 20
VOV.VN - Nguyen Van Hung, chairman of the Vietnam Olympic Committee, and Vietnamese Ambassador to Japan Pham Quang Hieu visited and encouraged members of the Vietnam sports delegation at the athletes’ village for the 2026 Asian Games (ASIAD 20) in Japan on September 19 ahead of competitions.
Reporting at the meeting, Chef de Mission Nguyen Hong Minh said accommodation and meals for the teams have been arranged and athletes’ health was being ensured. The delegation has also put in place support measures to provide teams with the best possible conditions during their preparations and competitions.
Addressing accommodation challenges
According to Minh, one of the challenges facing the Vietnamese delegation at this year’s Asian Games is that teams are staying in different locations, ranging from cruise ships and container housing complexes to separate hotels.
This arrangement has created additional challenges for coordination, management and support. The delegation, however, has developed appropriate measures to address the situation, ensuring smooth operations and support for teams when issues arise.
The Vietnamese beach volleyball and boxing teams are also due to arrive in Japan on September 19.
Minh said the athletes are showing strong determination and are ready to compete with their greatest effort and ambition.
Embassy ready to provide support
Ambassador Pham Quang Hieu said the Vietnamese Embassy in Japan is ready to serve as a bridge, support the delegation and accompany its members throughout their participation in the Asian Games.
According to the ambassador, Aichi is home to a large Vietnamese community. The performance and image of the Vietnamese delegation at the Games therefore have significance beyond sport, helping inspire pride and encouragement among Vietnamese people living in the area.
He expressed his hope that the athletes would compete in the spirit of fair play, solidarity and honesty and give their best, thereby contributing to promoting a positive image of the Vietnamese people.
Focusing on form and each competition
Vietnam Olympic Committee Chairman Nguyen Van Hung urged the delegation to continue ensuring logistical arrangements, carefully time athletes’ peak form and select appropriate competition strategies for each athlete.
He highlighted the role of coaches in closely monitoring and supporting athletes so that they can maintain their best physical, technical and psychological condition throughout the competition.
The Chairman of the Vietnam Olympic Committee also expressed expectations that sports including shooting, athletics and sepak takraw could compete strongly for achievements at the Games.
On behalf of the committee, he presented the delegation with VND100 million and wished officials, coaches and athletes good health, good luck and success in competition.
The 20th Asian Games opened in Aichi-Nagoya on September 19 and will run through October 4. The Games feature 43 sports and 469 medal events.
The Vietnamese sports delegation comprises 498 members, including 349 athletes, competing in 33 sports and disciplines. The delegation has set a target of winning at least four gold medals, with some official sources putting the target at four to six golds and aiming for a place in the top 20 of the medal table.
