Group B gold for Vietnamese men's chess team at 2026 Olympiad
VOV.VN - The Vietnamese men's chess team has clinched the Group B gold medal at the 2026 Chess Olympiad after securing a 2-2 draw against Kazakhstan in the final round on September 27.
Entering the 11th and final round in the open section, the young Vietnamese lineup, comprising Dau Khuong Duy, Banh Gia Huy, Nguyen Quoc Hy, and Pham Tran Gia Phuc, faced a formidable Kazakhstan team with higher-rated players.
On board one, Dau Khuong Duy suffered a defeat against Grandmaster Denis Makhnev, while Banh Gia Huy drew with Sauat Nurgaliyev on board two. The turning point came on board three, where Nguyen Quoc Hy defeated Grandmaster Aldiyar Ansat to secure a crucial point. Pham Tran Gia Phuc then held Grandmaster Zhandos Agmanov to a draw on board four, locking the final score at 2-2.
The result allowed Vietnam to defend its top spot in Group B and claim the gold medal. In addition to overall rankings, the Chess Olympiad assigns teams to groups based on average Elo seedings, with Group B comprising mid-tier federations.
A historic milestone marked the campaign as Banh Gia Huy and Nguyen Quoc Hy achieved International Grandmaster (GM) norms after 10 rounds of competition. This is the first time two Vietnamese players have earned GM norms at a single Olympiad.
Competing with a young roster through 11 rounds, the Vietnamese team gained valuable international experience against elite global opponents, capping off a successful tournament.
