Vietnam, Yangon Region expand economic ties, green transport, local connectivity
VOV.VN - Vietnam and Myanmar’s Yangon Region are expanding practical cooperation in trade, investment, green transport and local connectivity, with both sides looking to translate existing ties into specific projects and business opportunities.
The development of electric bus systems and greener urban transport was among the key issues discussed at a meeting between Vietnamese Ambassador Nguyen Anh Duc and Yangon Region Chief Minister Aung Naing Thu on October 2.
Aung Naing Thu highlighted the need to upgrade the region’s public transport system as part of its transition towards greener urban mobility.
He assured that the Yangon Region administration will continue supporting the Vietnamese community and businesses operating in the area, ensuring their safety and creating favourable conditions for their activities.
He expressed the Yangon Region administration’s readiness to welcome new Vietnamese investment projects in areas where the region has strengths, including telecommunications, energy and gas, agriculture, industry, tourism and services.
Meanwhile, Ambassador Nguyen Anh Duc said the Embassy is ready to serve as a bridge between Yangon authorities and Vietnamese partners with experience in developing and operating such projects.
Expanding business and city-to-city links
To translate the cooperation into concrete activities in the new period, the two sides agreed to coordinate a number of major events towards the end of 2026. These include the Autumn Economic Forum in Ho Chi Minh City in late October, which is expected to help maintain and further develop the twinning relationship between the two cities established in 2012.
The Yangon Region administration also agreed to facilitate the organisation of the Vietnam-Myanmar Trade Fair 2026 in the region in early December, providing an additional channel for businesses from the two countries to explore trade and investment opportunities.
The two sides will also work to broaden Yangon’s links beyond Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to other provinces and cities across Vietnam, creating a wider network for economic and business exchanges.
Room for deeper economic engagement
Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing’s official visit to Vietnam in early September 2026 provided fresh momentum for the Comprehensive Cooperative Partnership between the two countries.
As of August 2026, Vietnamese businesses had 106 valid investment projects in Myanmar with total registered capital of US$1.46 billion. Bilateral trade reached US$335 million in the first six months of 2026.
The figures point to considerable room for further engagement. Strengthening ties with Yangon Region could give Vietnamese businesses wider access to the local market while fostering greater complementarity between the two economies.
Closer links in green transport, trade, investment and subnational cooperation could also create conditions for new projects and support sustainable development in both countries.
