VOV.VN - Vietnam and Myanmar will strengthen political trust, promote cooperation through various channels and soon resume several key cooperation mechanisms.

The agreement was reached during a meeting in Hanoi on September 5 between Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung and Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing who is on an official visit to Vietnam at the invitation of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and State President To Lam.

Prime Minister Hung affirmed that Vietnam attaches importance to its traditional friendship and comprehensive cooperation partnership with Myanmar, and supports Myanmar’s efforts to promote stability, reconciliation and dialogue, develop its economy and improve people’s living standards.

President Hlaing spoke highly of Vietnam’s growing role and stature in the region and the world, and expressed his desire to learn from Vietnam’s experience in socio-economic development.

Key cooperation mechanisms to resume soon

The two leaders agreed to strengthen political trust and promote high-level and other-level contacts, while stepping up cooperation through Party, State, Government and parliamentary channels, as well as people-to-people diplomacy.

They vowed to work towards the early resumption of several key cooperation mechanisms, including the joint subcommittee on trade cooperation, the security dialogue and the joint working group on bilateral defence cooperation, thereby creating fresh momentum for the Vietnam-Myanmar comprehensive cooperation partnership.

Defence and security were identified as a pillar of bilateral cooperation. The two sides will continue coordinating efforts to combat transnational crime, cybercrime, online scams and drug-related crime. They pledged to expand training, exchanges between young officers, military cultural and sports exchanges, as well as cooperation in addressing non-traditional security challenges such as search and rescue and disaster response.

Promoting trade, investment and connectivity

In the economic sphere, Prime Minister Hung and President Hlaing said the two countries have considerable complementary potential and should step up measures to promote trade, alongside reviewing and updating commitments and agreements on trade, investment and customs.

The Prime Minister welcomed the organisation of a Vietnam – Myanmar business forum, which will provide opportunities for businesses from the two countries to connect and explore investment cooperation. He called on the Myanmar Government to continue creating favourable conditions and resolving difficulties facing Vietnamese businesses operating in Myanmar.

President Hlaing affirmed his continued support for Vietnamese businesses and expressed his hope that Vietnam would expand investment in Myanmar in areas such as telecommunications, digital transformation, high-tech agriculture, irrigation, aquaculture, food processing and infrastructure.

The two sides also pledged to strengthen infrastructure and air connectivity, promote cooperation in education and culture, people-to-people exchanges and locality-to-locality connectivity, and soon restore direct air services between Vietnam and Myanmar and develop joint tourism products, including spiritual and medical tourism.

Strengthening regional coordination

At the regional level, Prime Minister Hung spoke highly of Myanmar’s efforts to promote peace, stability and reconciliation, affirming that Vietnam will coordinate with other ASEAN countries to maintain engagement and promote constructive dialogue with Myanmar.

The two sides shared the view that disputes should be settled peacefully on the basis of international law, contributing to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region.

On the occasion, Prime Minister Hung invited President Hlaing to attend the 2026 Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam Summit (2026 CLMV Summit) and chair the 2026 Ayeyawady – Chao Phraya – Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy Summit (ACMECS Summit) in Hanoi in November 2026.

The Myanmar President also invited Prime Minister Le Minh Hung to visit Myanmar at a convenient time.

Earlier, Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing held talks with Party General Secretary and State President To Lam, and met with National Assembly President Tran Thanh Man.
