Parliamentary diplomacy helps strengthen Vietnam-Myanmar ties
VOV.VN - Vietnamese National Assembly President Tran Thanh Man and Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing agreed to strengthen parliamentary diplomacy to consolidate political trust, promote and oversee the implementation of high-level agreements, and contribute to the Vietnam-Myanmar comprehensive cooperation partnership.
During their meeting in Hanoi on September 5, NA President Man affirmed that Vietnam attaches importance to its traditional friendship and comprehensive cooperation partnership with Myanmar and wishes to see Myanmar remain peaceful, stable and prosperous.
President Hlaing thanked Vietnam for its support for Myanmar in bilateral relations and at regional and international forums, and hoped that Vietnam would continue to support Myanmar in its national development.
Strengthening parliamentary cooperation
The two leaders agreed that parliamentary diplomacy plays an important role in bilateral relations, contributing to the consolidation of political trust and promoting and overseeing the implementation of high-level agreements.
President Hlaing spoke highly of the role and contributions of the Vietnamese National Assembly to the country’s socio-economic development and expressed his desire for the two sides to strengthen coordination and work alongside their respective governments to realise signed cooperation agreements.
NA President Man and President Hlaing vowed to increase exchanges of delegations, as well as exchanges and experience sharing among specialised agencies, committees and parliamentary friendship groups, particularly in legislation, supreme oversight and decisions on major national issues.
The two sides also agreed to effectively implement the cooperation agreement between their two legislatures, while promoting the role of parliaments in creating a favourable legal framework and overseeing progress in the implementation of high-level agreements.
Expanding economic ties and multilateral coordination
Alongside parliamentary cooperation, NA President Man called for continued efforts to consolidate political trust through delegation exchanges and contacts at various levels, making more effective use of bilateral cooperation mechanisms.
In trade, investment and economic cooperation, he called for stronger business-to-business connectivity and urged the Myanmar Government to help address difficulties facing Vietnamese businesses operating and investing in the country, creating favourable conditions for them to make positive contributions to Myanmar’s socio-economic development.
Vietnam also affirmed its continued support for Myanmar’s participation in multilateral parliamentary forums such as the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
The two sides underlined the need to enhance coordination on regional and international issues of shared concern, contributing to a united and resilient ASEAN.
President Hlaing conveyed an invitation from the Speaker of the Myanmar Pyithu Hluttaw (Lower House) to National Assembly President Tran Thanh Man to visit Myanmar and discuss orientations for cooperation between the two legislatures.
NA President Man thanked the Myanmar side for the invitation and said he would arrange the visit at a mutually convenient time.
