VOV.VN - General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President To Lam presided over a welcoming ceremony in Hanoi on September 5 for Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing, marking the start of his official visit to Vietnam.

This is President Hlaing’s first official visit to Vietnam since Myanmar completed its general election and formed a new government in April 2026.

Following the ceremony, both leaders held talks focusing on Vietnam-Myanmar relations and issues of mutual concern.

Vietnam and Myanmar share longstanding traditional friendship nurtured by generations of leaders and peoples of the two countries. The two countries established diplomatic relations in 1975 and elevated their ties to a comprehensive cooperation partnership in August 2017, opening a new phase in bilateral relations.

Over more than five decades of diplomatic relations, the two countries have maintained cooperation across various fields and supported each other during difficult periods. Vietnam has affirmed its importance attached to relations with Myanmar, expressed its support for Myanmar’s socio-economic development and national reconciliation process, and voiced its wish for Myanmar to achieve stability and development and enhance its role in the region and the world.

Myanmar, meanwhile, has highly valued Vietnam’s development achievements and attached importance to its comprehensive cooperation partnership with Vietnam. It expects that Vietnam would continue to share experience in national reconstruction and development and facilitate the effective operations of Vietnamese businesses in Myanmar.

Expanding cooperation in a new period

The visit takes place as Vietnam-Myanmar relations are seen to have favourable conditions for broader cooperation across a range of areas.

The two sides can continue promoting cooperation in economy, trade, investment, science and technology, connectivity, tourism and people-to-people exchanges, helping deepen the comprehensive cooperation partnership and deliver practical benefits to the peoples of both countries.

Myanmar also offers considerable room for Vietnamese businesses to expand, while several major Vietnamese companies have maintained operations in the country in recent years.

President Min Aung Hlaing’s visit is therefore expected to provide fresh impetus for the two sides to strengthen political trust, expand practical cooperation and increase exchanges through various channels and at different levels.

Beyond bilateral ties, Vietnam has affirmed its continued proactive, active and responsible role in ASEAN, contributing to joint efforts for peace, stability and development in Myanmar and to building a united, cohesive and resilient ASEAN Community.
