VOV.VN - A Vietnam Airlines flight from Copenhagen to Ho Chi Minh City has been diverted to Yangon, Myanmar, for an emergency landing after a pregnant passenger went into labour and gave birth on board.

About 10 hours after taking off on September 5, Vietnamese passenger N.L.D.L. suddenly went into labour. The cabin crew immediately carried out first-aid measures in line with emergency response procedures and made an announcement seeking passengers with medical expertise.

With assistance from the cabin crew and five passengers who volunteered to help, the baby was delivered safely on board the flight.

After the birth, the crew determined that the mother’s condition required further medical examination and decided to divert the aircraft for an emergency landing at Yangon International Airport in Myanmar.

Upon receiving the information, Vietnam Airlines coordinated with its ground service provider in Myanmar and airport authorities to arrange medical assistance. The mother and her baby were subsequently taken to hospital for further treatment.

After medical assistance was completed, flight VN38 resumed its journey at 3:30 a.m. local time on September 6 and landed safely at Tan Son Nhat International Airport at 6:05 a.m. the same day.

Vietnam Airlines said the decision to divert the flight was made to prioritise the passenger’s health and safety in the exceptional circumstances.

The incident is among a number of cases in which Vietnam Airlines has diverted or adjusted flight routes to provide medical assistance to passengers. On June 24, 2026, flight VN524 from Ho Chi Minh City to Shanghai made an emergency landing in Hong Kong. On January 7, 2026, flight VN36 from Frankfurt to Hanoi made an emergency landing at Kolkata Airport in India. Earlier, on September 17, 2025, flight VN30 from Frankfurt to Ho Chi Minh City also made an emergency landing at Istanbul International Airport in Türkiye.

Vietnam Airlines advised passengers to proactively monitor and assess their health before each journey. Those experiencing any unusual symptoms are advised to consult a doctor promptly and carefully consider whether to travel by air to ensure their health and safety.
