Vietnam and Cambodia deepen parliamentary cooperation ahead of 60th anniversary
VOV.VN - Vietnam and Cambodia are stepping up parliamentary cooperation, with both sides agreeing to implement agreements between their National Assemblies, strengthen exchanges among committees and lawmakers, and prepare practical activities marking 60 years of diplomatic ties in 2027.
The agreement was reached during a meeting in Phnom Penh on August 27 between Cambodian National Assembly President Khuon Sudary and Vietnamese National Assembly Vice President Nguyen Thi Thanh who was on a working visit to Cambodia.
Thanh stressed the need for the two legislatures to continue promoting the implementation of agreements reached by the countries’ senior leaders, helping foster Vietnam-Cambodia parliamentary cooperation.
The two sides also discussed practical activities to mark the 60th anniversary of Vietnam-Cambodia diplomatic relations (June 24, 1967 – 2027), with a focus on educating younger generations about the longstanding tradition of solidarity, friendship and cooperation between the two peoples.
A specific issue raised by the Vietnamese side was the continued attention to legal documentation for people of Vietnamese origin in Cambodia, creating conditions for them to stabilise their lives, integrate into the host society and contribute to Cambodia’s socio-economic development as well as friendship between the two countries.
In response, Sudary said the Cambodian National Assembly and relevant authorities would continue to pay attention to and facilitate the lawful residence and livelihoods of people of Vietnamese origin in Cambodia.
Another issue of humanitarian significance discussed by the two sides was the search for and repatriation of the remains of Vietnamese fallen soldiers, volunteer troops and experts who died in Cambodia.
Sudary said Cambodia is actively coordinating with Vietnam in this work, contributing to the implementation of the “500-day-and-night campaign.”
Alongside these issues, the two sides agreed to continue effectively implementing existing cooperation agreements between their National Assemblies and strengthen exchanges and coordination among parliamentary committees, women lawmakers and young lawmakers.
The Vietnamese side also encouraged continued cooperation and exchanges as the two countries prepare for activities marking six decades of diplomatic relations in 2027.
National Assembly Vice President Nguyen Thi Thanh conveyed greetings from Vietnam’s senior leaders to Sudary, while the Cambodian side spoke highly of the participation of the Vietnamese National Assembly delegation in the Second Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference (ISC-2) which is taking place in Phnom Penh from August 26-28.
