Strategic messages underscore traditional friendship between Vietnam and Cambodia

VOV.VN - Cambodia’s National Assembly President Samdech Khuon Sudary and her high-ranking delegation arrived in Phnom Penh on the evening of July 29, successfully concluding an official visit to Vietnam from July 27-29 to further tighten traditional friendship, solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation between the two neighboring Southeast Asian nations.

In press interviews on the occasion, Associate Professor Dr. Neak Chandarith, Director of the International Relations Institute for Policy and Public Issues (IISPP) at the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP), noted that Samdech Khuon Sudary’s trip delivered three key strategic messages to the regional and international community.

He emphasized that the foremost point is political stability and institutional confidence. Amid current global uncertainties and geopolitical fractures, the visit demonstrates that bilateral ties are not a temporary alliance driven by circumstances, but a strategic pillar solidly reinforced through legislative institutions.

He stated: "The leaders of both countries have shown consistent political will to turn slogans of good neighborliness, traditional friendship, and comprehensive cooperation into concrete achievements, based on respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, and non-interference-what I call a perpetual friendship and neighborhood."

Second, according to the RUPP scholar, is multilateral coordination and ASEAN's central role. Speaking within forums like the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), and the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF), the visit reaffirms both nations' determination to act as strategic partners.

Mutual support and diplomatic alignment on the global stage not only serve national interests but also safeguard ASEAN's centrality, preventing the region from falling into blocs of competing powers.

Finally, the scholar highlighted proactive responses to global challenges. Legislative bodies coordinate to address transnational issues such as cybercrime, non-traditional security, climate change, and green economic development, reflecting a forward-looking, equal partnership ready to face 21st-century crises.

Sharing this perspective, Dr. Chheang Vannarith, Deputy Secretary-General and Chief Advisor to the Cambodian National Assembly, said that mutual trust constitutes a profound political strategy. However, he stressed the need to "translate political trust into concrete outcomes for the people" through specific development projects and mutual support internationally.

Dr. Chheang Vannarith pointed out that legislative leaders frequently meet at regional and international forums, with another bilateral meeting scheduled for this coming November during the 47th ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA-47) in the Philippines. He affirmed: "Political trust is paramount, and preserving it requires frequent meetings as friends, alongside strategic political trust."

Ultimately, the Chief Advisor underscored that good neighborliness and comprehensive cooperation must manifest through concrete results tied to the people's welfare, powered by joint development programs.
