ASIAD 20: Vietnam weightlifting wins first medal in men’s 65kg category
VOV.VN - Tran Minh Tri won a bronze medal in the men’s 65kg weightlifting, giving Vietnam its first weightlifting medal at the ongoing 20th Asian Games (ASIAD 20) with a total lift of 309kg.
In the final held on September 24 at the Nagoya City Trade and Industry Centre, Minh Tri lifted 139kg in the snatch and 170kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 309kg.
In the snatch, the Vietnamese lifter opened with 136kg and successfully lifted 139kg on his second attempt. He then entered 141kg for his third attempt but was unsuccessful, finishing the discipline with a best lift of 139kg.
In the clean and jerk, Minh Tri successfully lifted 170kg. The result gave him a total of 309kg, enough for third place overall and the bronze medal.
Pak Myong Jin of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) won gold with a total of 328kg, while China’s He Yueji took silver with 327kg. Indonesia’s Eko Yuli Irawan finished fourth with 302kg.
The bronze medal at ASIAD 20 marked a notable milestone for Minh Tri after he finished sixth in the men’s 65kg category at the 2026 Asian Weightlifting Championships with a total of 294kg. He improved his total by 15kg at the Asian Games.
With six lifters, including four men, receiving targeted investment, the Vietnam weightlifting team entered ASIAD 20 aiming to contend for medals. Tran Minh Tri’s bronze in the men’s 65kg category not only fulfilled that target but also marked Vietnam weightlifting’s return to the Asian Games podium.
Earlier in the morning, Vietnamese martial artist Dinh Van Tam secured a silver medal in the men's 56kg sanshou, completing a full medal set for Vietnam at the games.
