Dong Nai reburies remains of 29 fallen soldiers
VOV.VN - The remains of 29 fallen Vietnamese soldiers have been reburied in Dong Nai City, with DNA testing expected to help identify some of those who gave their lives for national independence and reunification.
A memorial and reburial ceremony for the remains was held at Binh Phuoc Martyrs' Cemetery in Dong Tam commune, on August 13.
Addressing the ceremony, Nguyen Thi Hoang, vice chairwoman of the Dong Nai People's Committee and head of the city's Steering Committee 515, said the search and recovery of martyrs' remains, along with the preservation and maintenance of memorial sites, are a key political responsibility and a sacred duty of the current generation toward those who sacrificed their lives for national independence and freedom.
Since 2002, K72 Team under the Dong Nai Military Command has searched thousands of locations and recovered 4,038 sets of martyrs' remains despite numerous difficulties.
During July and August 2026, the team recovered 26 sets of remains in Minh Duc commune, the former Binh Phuoc province, now part of Dong Nai City, and two sets in Loc Ninh commune, also in the former Binh Phuoc province.
Meanwhile, K76 Team recovered one set of martyrs' remains in Loc Tan commune, the former Binh Phuoc province, on the first day after taking over the search and recovery mission.
Of the 29 sets of remains recovered in this latest operation, 19 yielded biological samples suitable for DNA testing.
The samples, together with DNA samples collected from relatives of the fallen soldiers, are expected to help authorities identify the remains and provide families with information about their loved ones.
At the solemn ceremony, delegates laid wreaths and offered incense before observing a minute of silence in tribute to the fallen soldiers.
K76 Team is currently responsible for searching for and recovering martyrs' remains within the country in Dong Nai City.
The team is expanding searches to areas around Bu Gia Map National Park, as well as locations in the former Binh Phuoc province.
These areas were identified based on information provided by witnesses. Authorities are cross-checking and verifying the information to determine precise locations before conducting further searches.
K72 Team, meanwhile, will undertake missions to search for and recover the remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who died in Cambodia.
The ongoing efforts are expected to help bring more fallen soldiers home and give their families an opportunity to learn the identities and resting places of those who sacrificed their lives for the country.
