45 rescued after cargo vessel sinks in East Sea, search continues for 17 missing
VOV.VN - Rescue teams have saved 45 of the 62 people aboard the Vietnamese cargo vessel Khoi Nguyen 18 after it sank in severe weather in the East Sea, while search operations continue for 17 people who remain missing, the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
Responding to reporters' questions on July 26, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pham Thu Hang said the vessel sank in rough weather conditions.
Immediately after the incident, Vietnamese authorities launched search-and-rescue operations and coordinated with Chinese rescue forces, as well as nearby vessels, to locate and assist those on board.
By midday on July 26, rescue teams had safely recovered 45 survivors, while efforts were underway to locate the remaining 17 people.
According to the spokesperson, Vietnamese authorities have kept families informed of developments in the rescue operation and are preparing support measures for survivors returning safely to shore.
Vietnam also expressed appreciation for the assistance provided by Chinese rescue authorities, who promptly deployed rescue vessels and helicopters to support the operation.
"We sincerely thank the Chinese authorities for their prompt support in the search-and-rescue operation and hope both sides will continue to work closely together to locate those who remain missing," the spokesperson said.
Search efforts are underway as rescue teams continue to monitor weather conditions and coordinate operations in the area.
