The centre said it received an emergency distress report on June 5 from the TWIN POLLUX, which was travelling from China to Singapore through waters off Khanh Hoa Province.
The injured crew member, a Chinese national born in 1981, suffered a workplace accident that left his right eye seriously injured and bleeding heavily. He also experienced severe pain and numbness on the right side of his head. The vessel’s captain requested urgent assistance.
Immediately after receiving the report, the VMRCC established direct contact with the vessel to provide medical advice and guide crew members in administering first aid and emergency care.
Assessing that the victim’s condition could become life-threatening without urgent evacuation to shore, the centre instructed the captain to proceed towards Nha Trang while coordinating with relevant agencies, and the vessel owner’s agent in Vietnam, to prepare a rescue plan.
Under the direction of the Vietnam Maritime and Waterway Administration under the Ministry of Construction, the specialised search and rescue vessel SAR 273, stationed in Nha Trang Ward, Khanh Hoa province, was dispatched on June 5.
SAR 273 reached the TWIN POLLUX at noon the same day. Rescue personnel and two military medical officers from the Khanh Hoa Border Guard Command boarded the tanker, administered first aid and transferred the injured crew member to the rescue vessel.
Later that afternoon, SAR 273 safely brought the patient to the centre’s pier in Nha Trang, where he was handed over to relevant authorities, representatives of the shipowner and transferred to Vinmec Nha Trang International General Hospital for emergency and specialised treatment.
