Cultural exchange highlights Vietnam-Japan ties in Can Tho

Sunday, 14:11, 13/09/2026

VOV.VN - Located in the heart of the Mekong Delta, Can Tho city is hosting the 2026 Vietnam-Japan Culture and Trade Exchange from September 11 to 13, featuring over 100 booths and a broad array of cultural and trade activities, highlighted by a traditional costume parade.

First launched in 2015, the Vietnam-Japan Culture and Trade Exchange in Can Tho is held biennially, marking its sixth edition this year and serving as a flagship external relations activity that deepens people-to-people exchanges, commercial ties, and cooperation between Can Tho and Japan.

Around 100 booths representing Vietnamese and Japanese organizations and businesses converge at this year's event, including about 40 Japanese partners introducing products and services while opening up trade connection opportunities across various sectors.

Local residents and visitors experience a wide range of Vietnamese-Japanese cultural, artistic, and culinary activities, including Japanese cooking demonstrations, wagashi making, traditional folk cakes, cosplay contests, musical performances, martial arts displays, and interactive booth experiences.

Young people also join the event by cosplaying as their favorite characters. Originating in Japan in 1970, cosplay was introduced to Vietnam in the 2000s and has since become a popular trend among Vietnamese youth, serving as an indispensable feature at cultural festivals and events.

The walking and parade activity forms part of the event's schedule. This meaningful and distinctive highlight serves to spread friendship, enhance solidarity, mutual understanding, and trust between Can Tho City and Japanese localities, organizations, businesses, and citizens.

Ao dai, ba ba shirts, kimonos, happis, and yukatas blend with the vibrant colors of Vietnamese and Japanese flags, turning the streets into a colorful and lively scene.

The parade stretched hundreds of meters, creating a lively and joyful atmosphere in the Mekong Delta city during the morning.

The walking activity serves not only as an opportunity to promote the traditional cultural beauty of Vietnam and Japan while enhancing exchanges, understanding, and ties between the two nations' people, but also spreads the spirit of sharing to support disadvantaged children in the city.

At the event, rice painting artisans also bring their works and perform live demonstrations to introduce visitors, locals, and Japanese friends to a traditional Vietnamese folk art form.

Trying on traditional costumes from both countries is a favorite experiential activity. In the photo, local women capture memorable moments in Japan's iconic traditional attire, the kimono.

Ozaki Yurie from Japan's Fukushima Prefecture experiences making traditional folk cakes while wearing a ba ba shirt featuring a Southern Vietnamese checkered scarf pattern.

Traditional costume and culinary showcases are organized alongside cultural promotion content highlighting popular culture from both Vietnam and Japan.

The program creates trade opportunities while helping strengthen mutual understanding and ties between the two communities.

The artistic performances staged at the program help people from both countries gain a deeper understanding of each other's culture, people, and daily life.

Visitors to Can Tho City during this occasion enjoy experiencing the cultures of both Vietnam and Japan simultaneously.

Originating as an exchange activity held in Can Tho since 2015, the program increasingly expands its role in connecting agencies, organizations, businesses, educational institutions, and friendship associations from both sides.

Combining culture with trade, investment, and people-to-people exchanges creates additional channels for direct engagement, helping businesses and partners better understand market demands and cooperation potential.
