Vietnam chess teams make major leap in global rankings after Olympiad success

VOV.VN - Vietnam has climbed four spots to 32nd in the latest FIDE national federation rankings following strong performances at the 2026 Chess Olympiad.

The International Chess Federation released its updated standings, which aggregate the ratings of a country's top players. Vietnam advanced from 36th to 32nd in the combined rankings, surpassing Italy at 33rd and Norway at 35th.

In the women's division, the country jumped seven places to 24th, outranking traditional chess powers including the Czech Republic, Slovenia, and Iran.

The national teams delivered notable results at the Olympiad among a field of more than 200 competing nations. The men's squad secured the Group B gold medal, while the women's team finished ninth overall.

Nguyen Thi Mai Hung spearheaded the tournament, finishing undefeated across nine rounds with seven wins and two draws. The 1994-born player earned an individual silver medal on board five and gained 29.4 Elo points to reach 2306.

FIDE President Timur Turlov formally recognized the national team's achievements following the tournament.
