VOV.VN -The country has called for stronger primary healthcare integration to tackle the region's dual disease burden at the 17th ASEAN Health Ministers Meeting (AHMM 17) and Related Meetings in Kuala Lumpur.

Led by Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Thi Lien Huong, the Vietnamese delegation is attending the meetings held under the theme "Healthy ASEAN: Together Towards Equitable, Future-Ready Health Systems".

During the ministerial retreat on September 9 focusing on communicable and non-communicable diseases (NCDs), Huong emphasized the pivotal role of primary healthcare. She proposed three core actions for regional cooperation: establishing a standardized essential NCD intervention package at the grassroots level, expanding training and expert exchanges for remote and disadvantaged areas, and unifying baseline indicators to track progress without creating reporting redundancies.

On the same day, Huong participated in discussions on accelerating the operationalization of the ASEAN Centre for Public Health Emergencies and Emerging Diseases (ACPHEED). On the sidelines, she held bilateral talks with Indonesian Health Minister Budi Gunadi to share experience regarding the center's establishment and operation.

She also met with Bethany Kozma, Assistant Secretary for Global Affairs at the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Both sides agreed to deepen cooperation in disease control, specifically addressing HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis, alongside health security, field epidemiology training, biosecurity, and healthcare system strengthening.

Through September 11, the Vietnamese delegation will continue participating in related sessions to help shape strategic priorities and adopt the ASEAN Health Strategic Agenda for 2026-2030 (ASHA 2026-2030), reinforcing regional health security and sustainable development.
