New US Ambassador Jennifer Wicks begins mission in Vietnam
VOV.VN - New US Ambassador to Vietnam Jennifer Wicks has arrived in Hanoi to begin her diplomatic mission, the US Embassy announced on July 2, marking the start of her tenure as the first woman to serve as US ambassador to Vietnam.
On its official Facebook page, the US Embassy in Hanoi wrote that Ambassador Wicks looks forward to working closely with Vietnamese partners to advance US priorities, strengthen the Vietnam–US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, and expand opportunities for greater prosperity, security and cooperation between the two countries.
Wicks was confirmed by the US Senate on May 18 as ambassador to Vietnam, becoming the first woman to hold the post. She was sworn into office in June before departing for Hanoi to assume her duties.
During her confirmation hearing before the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations in December 2025, Wicks said the administration of President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio viewed Vietnam as one of the United States’ most important partners in the region.
She noted that bilateral relations have continued to expand across a broad range of areas, including defence, security, trade, investment and people-to-people exchanges.
The diplomat also described economic ties as one of the strongest pillars of the bilateral relationship, highlighting the significant potential for further cooperation and the shared interests of both economies.
