Vietnam welcomes more US investment in semiconductors, high-tech industries
VOV.VN - Vietnam has encouraged US companies to expand investment in high-tech industries, particularly semiconductors and artificial intelligence (AI), as the country accelerates efforts to build a globally competitive technology ecosystem and attract high-value foreign investment.
The message was delivered by Deputy Prime Minister Ho Quoc Dung during his reception in Hanoi on June 26 for Jeff Place, chief supply chain officer of US-based Coherent Corp, a leading U.S manufacturer of optical materials, semiconductor components and laser technologies.
The Deputy Prime Minister reaffirmed the Vietnamese Government's commitment to creating a favourable business environment and supporting foreign enterprises, particularly US investors seeking to expand long-term operations in Vietnam.
He said Vietnam aims to achieve double-digit economic growth during the 2026–2030 period, with science and technology, innovation and digital transformation identified as key drivers of future growth.
To achieve this goal, Vietnam is prioritising foreign direct investment projects that feature advanced technologies, strong research and development (R&D) capabilities, close cooperation with domestic enterprises, workforce development and deeper integration into global value chains.
The Deputy Prime Minister noted that Vietnam is accelerating the development of its semiconductor ecosystem by expanding participation across the industry's value chain, including chip design, packaging, testing, materials production and manufacturing equipment.
Alongside industrial development, Vietnam is investing in high-quality human resources and seeking strategic investors capable of strengthening the country's position in the global semiconductor supply chain.
He also highlighted plans to establish semiconductor, electronics and high-tech industrial ecosystems in localities with strong manufacturing infrastructure, logistics networks and skilled labour pools, while promoting supporting industries and increasing the localization of materials and components.
Vietnam is also encouraging investment in modern AI infrastructure and data centres that meet high standards for energy efficiency, cybersecurity and sustainable development, he added.
The Deputy Prime Minister praised Coherent's operations in Vietnam, where the company has maintained a presence for more than two decades and contributed to the production of optical components, semiconductor materials, precision optical glass and laser solutions serving global supply chains.
He reaffirmed that Vietnam attaches great importance to its Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with the United States, describing cooperation in investment, science and technology, innovation, semiconductors and digital transformation as strategic priorities that deliver tangible benefits for both countries.
He welcomed US companies to further expand investment in Vietnam, particularly in high-tech and high-value-added industries. He also encouraged stronger collaboration in technology transfer, research, workforce training and supply chain development.
For his part, Place said Coherent has operated in Vietnam for approximately 25 years and has developed manufacturing facilities that rank among the company's highest-performing operations worldwide.
He said the company intends to further expand its investment in Vietnam while supporting the country's long-term technological development through workforce training, research partnerships with Vietnamese universities and collaboration in building the domestic semiconductor ecosystem.
According to Place, Coherent also aims to accelerate the implementation of its long-term investment strategy in Vietnam, helping position the country as an increasingly important hub in the global semiconductor supply chain.
