Vietnam proposes deeper security cooperation with the United States
VOV.VN - Vietnam has called for enhanced cooperation with the United States in combating transnational crime and strengthening strategic trust as the two countries continue implementing their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Vietnamese Minister of Public Security Luong Tam Quang made the proposal during his reception in Hanoi on June 10 for US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, who was visiting Vietnam to attend the ASEAN Future Forum 2026.
Quang welcomed Landau’s visit and highlighted the significant progress achieved in bilateral relations since the normalisation of diplomatic ties three decades ago and the establishment of the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2023.
He stressed that amid an increasingly complex international environment, both countries should continue reinforcing strategic trust and effectively implement cooperation frameworks under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
He reaffirmed the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security’s readiness to work closely with US agencies through information sharing, professional exchanges and the development of concrete cooperation programmes.
The minister emphasised that stronger mutual trust would help both sides address emerging security challenges and deepen practical cooperation in areas of shared interest.
During the meeting, Quang proposed that the US Department of State continue supporting initiatives aimed at enhancing the capacity of Vietnamese law enforcement agencies. He also called for greater cooperation in training programmes, professional exchanges and technical assistance.
In addition, he expressed Vietnam’s interest in receiving further support in equipment and infrastructure serving efforts to combat transnational crime, cybercrime and other emerging security threats.
For his part, Landau praised the positive development of bilateral ties in recent years. He voiced Washington’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security and other relevant agencies.
He said the United States stands ready to work closely with Vietnam in addressing issues of mutual concern and promoting practical outcomes that benefit both countries and their peoples.
Both sides agreed to maintain regular exchanges and strengthen cooperation in security, law enforcement and the fight against transnational crime.
