Canada, Vietnam augment defence cooperation in areas with strong potential
VOV.VN - Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Phan Van Giang on June 23 received Canadian Ambassador to Vietnam James Nickel in Hanoi, with both sides discussing bilateral defence cooperation in areas with strong potential.

Expressing satisfaction with the positive development of the Vietnam-Canada Comprehensive Partnership, Giang said bilateral ties have continued to grow in a substantive and effective manner across multiple areas.
He noted that based on signed agreements, including the 2019 memorandum of understanding on defence cooperation and the 2024-2026 three-year defence cooperation plan, bilateral defence cooperation has been carried out effectively in areas such as delegation exchanges, dialogue and consultations, training, United Nations peacekeeping, defence industry and maritime security.
He thanked Canada’s Department of National Defence for offering short-term training scholarships under the Military Training and Cooperation Program (MTCP) to officers and cadets of the Vietnam People’s Army in fields aligned with Vietnam’s needs.
Vietnam’s Ministry of National Defence is ready to receive personnel from Canada’s Department of National Defence for Vietnamese language training and participation in international defence officer courses at Vietnamese military academies and schools, Giang told his guest.
He asked Ambassador James Nickel to continue supporting the implementation of agreed defence cooperation activities between the two ministries.
Priority areas include delegation exchanges, particularly high-level visits, training cooperation, UN peacekeeping, search and rescue, cybersecurity, border management, war consequence mitigation and consultations within multilateral defence and security mechanisms.
On the occasion, Giang informed the ambassador that Vietnam plans to organise the third Vietnam International Defence Expo in December 2026.
He invited James Nickel to attend the event, while saying that invitations have also been sent to leaders of Canada’s Department of National Defence.
He added that Vietnam’s Ministry of National Defence stands ready to facilitate Canadian businesses seeking to introduce products and explore cooperation opportunities at the expo.
Giang affirmed that Vietnam’s Ministry of National Defence will continue offering favourable conditions for Ambassador James Nickel to fulfil his mission in Vietnam as a contribution to bilateral friendship and cooperation.
In response, James Nickel said he is impressed by Vietnam’s socio-economic achievements in recent years, as well as the country’s growing role and standing in the region and internationally.
Defence cooperation remains an important pillar of bilateral ties and has delivered practical results in recent years, he emphasized.
James Nickel said defence cooperation between the two countries still has considerable potential and he will continue efforts to promote bilateral defence cooperation and the broader Vietnam-Canada partnership, with a focus on training, UN peacekeeping, defence industry and other areas of shared interest.
