VOV.VN - Vietnam and Canada agreed to further deepen their Comprehensive Partnership during a meeting in Hanoi on June 18 between Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man and newly appointed Canadian Ambassador to Vietnam Jim Nickel.

Welcoming the Ambassador, Chairman Man conveyed his regards to Canada's Governor General, the Speakers of the House of Commons and Senate, and the Canadian people. He also expressed confidence that the ambassador would make important contributions to advancing bilateral relations during his tenure in Vietnam.

The National Assembly Chairman noted that Vietnam–Canada relations have continued to develop positively in recent years through regular high-level exchanges and effective cooperation mechanisms, helping strengthen mutual understanding and political trust.

He highlighted growing economic ties between the two countries, with bilateral trade reaching approximately US$8.6 billion in 2025. Canada has become one of Vietnam’s important trading partners, while cooperation in science and technology, education and training has also produced encouraging results.

Vietnam attaches importance to its relationship with Canada and considers the country an important partner, the Vietnamese leader told his guest.

He noted that the two countries share common priorities, including promoting peace, stability, the rule of law, multilateralism and diversified international relations.

According to the Chairman, there remains considerable room for cooperation in emerging fields such as clean energy, green growth, innovation, high technology and high-quality human resource development.

He called for stronger practical cooperation in these sectors while making better use of opportunities created by the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) to expand economic collaboration and market access.

The Vietnamese leader also highlighted the importance of parliamentary cooperation, describing it as a valuable channel for strengthening bilateral ties.

He expressed appreciation for Canada’s support in helping Vietnam improve its legal framework and enhance the capacity of National Assembly agencies.

For his part, Ambassador Jim Nickel praised Vietnam’s socio-economic achievements as well as its active international integration efforts.

He reaffirmed that Canada views Vietnam as one of its key partners in ASEAN and an important bridge for strengthening Canada–ASEAN relations.

He noted that amid an increasingly complex global environment, Vietnam and Canada share common interests in maintaining peace, stability, free trade and a rules-based international order.

The Canadian ambassador expressed Canada’s desire to work more closely with Vietnam in areas such as resilient supply chains, food security, energy security and climate change response.

Both sides agreed to maintain exchanges between parliamentary leaders, strengthen cooperation among specialised committees and further promote the role of friendship parliamentarians’ groups. They pledged to continue close coordination at regional and international inter-parliamentary forums.

They also agreed to enhance coordination within multilateral frameworks, including the CPTPP and APEC, with a view to promoting a more substantive, stable and long-term partnership.
