Vietnam and Canada hold vast potential for expanded cooperation

VOV.VN - Vietnam and Canada still hold vast potential for stronger cooperation, particularly in trade, investment, innovation, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, energy security, and human resource development, as both countries seek to further strengthen their Comprehensive Partnership.

The view was shared during a meeting in Hanoi on June 16 between Trinh Van Quyet, Politburo member, Secretary of the Party Central Committee, and Head of the Party Central Committee's Commission for Information, Education and Mass Mobilisation, and Jim Nickel, Ambassador of Canada to Vietnam.

The two sides reviewed the progress of Vietnam–Canada relations and discussed directions for expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

Quyet noted that bilateral relations have continued to develop positively and substantively since the establishment of the Vietnam–Canada Comprehensive Partnership in 2017.

He highlighted strong growth in bilateral trade, which was estimated at approximately US$8.5 billion in 2025, while cooperation in education and training, people-to-people exchanges, and high-level visits has also expanded steadily.

The Vietnamese official emphasised that considerable potential remains for the two countries to broaden cooperation across a wide range of sectors, particularly those linked to future growth and sustainable development.

He told his guest that Vietnam is prioritising science and technology, innovation, and high-quality human resource development as it pursues its long-term development goals of becoming an upper-middle-income country with modern industry by 2030 and a developed, high-income nation by 2045.

He also reaffirmed Vietnam's role as an active and responsible member of ASEAN and expressed the country's readiness to serve as a bridge for strengthening cooperation between Canada and Southeast Asia.

Vietnam, he added, hopes to become an important gateway connecting Canada with ASEAN markets, creating new momentum for trade, investment, and economic cooperation.

For his part, Ambassador Nickel welcomed the positive momentum in bilateral relations and highlighted growing exchanges between the two peoples, including the increasing number of Vietnamese students pursuing education in Canada.

The diplomat stressed that Canada highly values Vietnam's role within ASEAN and the broader Indo-Pacific region and expressed hope for Vietnam's continued support for negotiations on the ASEAN–Canada Free Trade Agreement (ACAFTA).

Both sides also exchanged views on media cooperation. Ambassador Nickel praised the contribution of the Vietnamese press to strengthening mutual understanding between the two countries and showed interest in enhancing collaboration to address disinformation and challenges posed by artificial intelligence in the digital media landscape.

Concluding the meeting, Quyet expressed confidence that the ambassador's tenure in Vietnam would contribute to advancing bilateral relations and unlocking new opportunities for cooperation under the Vietnam–Canada Comprehensive Partnership.
