Ho Chi Minh City shifts MICE tourism focus toward high economic value

VOV.VN - Ho Chi Minh City is shifting its MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism strategy from focusing on visitor group volume to generating high economic value, prioritizing specialized conferences and exhibitions linked to key economic sectors.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism conducted a survey of MICE products and services in the neighboring area of Binh Duong on September 29, followed by a conference summarizing the city's 2022–2025 MICE tourism program.

During the field trip, the delegation visited Song Be Golf Resort to inspect golf tourism infrastructure and operations, toured the Minh Long Ceramic Museum, and surveyed conference and exhibition facilities at the World Trade Center Binh Duong (WTC) alongside lodging and event services at Becamex New City Hotel.

At the event, Pham Huy Binh, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism, said that after nearly four years of coordinated efforts among management agencies, sectors, associations, and businesses, the quality of MICE tourism has steadily improved.

Binh emphasized that MICE integrates multiple services, from transport and accommodation to dining, retail, and sightseeing. The city's development footprint has expanded: the central urban area excels in commerce, finance, and event organization; Binh Duong adds industrial and exhibition capacity; while Ba Ria - Vung Tau and Con Dao offer coastal, resort, and marine economy products. The key challenge lies in linking these regional advantages into highly competitive MICE packages.

Binh added that the city's MICE tourism development master plan through 2030, with a vision toward 2045, concentrates on upgrading foundational conditions, proactively attracting high-value conventions, and building a professional MICE ecosystem, supported by City People's Council Resolution No. 62.

Addressing the conference, Nguyen Loc Ha, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, lauded the inter-agency collaboration between 2022 and 2025. He stressed that the city must transition from providing financial support mechanisms to enhancing the substantive competitiveness of its MICE destinations.

Accordingly, Ho Chi Minh City will target conferences and exhibitions in line with priority sectors such as finance, technology, innovation, logistics, healthcare, education, industry, and the marine economy. MICE performance will be evaluated based on length of stay, tourist spending, event quality, repeat visits, and post-event economic impact rather than simple headcounts.

City leaders also called for enhanced market research, stronger bidding preparation for international events, and tighter connectivity with international associations and organizers.

Moving forward, Ho Chi Minh City will continue upgrading infrastructure, workforce skills, technology, and promotion efforts, while encouraging businesses to invest in products, enhance service quality as well as connectivity to build a comprehensive MICE service chain.
