Vietnam placed among top seeds for ASIAD 2026 football draw
VOV.VN - Vietnam have been placed in the top seeding pot for the men's football tournament at the 2026 Asian Games (ASIAD), alongside hosts Japan, the Republic of Korea and China, giving them a favourable position ahead of the group-stage draw.
The national Olympic team have been placed in Pot 1 thanks to their third-place finish at the 2026 AFC U23 Asian Cup. Coached by Kim Sang-sik, the team reached the semi-finals before securing the bronze medal, a result that boosted their seeding for ASIAD.
Pot 2 consists of Uzbekistan, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia and Thailand. Pot 3 includes Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Qatar and the Philippines, while Kuwait, Hong Kong (China) and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPR Korea) make up the fourth pot.
Although Vietnam have avoided facing fellow top seeds in the group stage, they could still be drawn against strong opponents from the lower pots, including Uzbekistan, Saudi Arabia, Iran or Qatar.
Under the competition format announced by organisers, 15 teams will compete in four groups, with three groups of four teams and one group of three. The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals.
As hosts, Japan have been assigned the A1 position, while Vietnam, the Republic of Korea and China complete Pot 1.
The men's football tournament at ASIAD 2026 will be held from September 15 to October 3 in the Japanese cities of Osaka, Toyota, Nagoya, and Kariya.
