Tuyet Sang claims silver for Vietnam in virtual taekwondo at ASIAD 20
VOV.VN - Chau Ngoc Tuyet Sang secured a silver medal for Vietnam in the individual mixed virtual taekwondo event at the 20th Asian Games (ASIA 20) after losing 0-2 to Yape Gabriel Derick of the Philippines in the final.
To reach the final, Tuyet Sang defeated competitors from the Republic of Korea (RoK), Thailand, and Singapore, overcoming both male and female opponents in a gender-integrated bracket. She advanced through dominant victories in the preliminary rounds, including a standout performance against Singaporean opponent Yap Zong Han Darren and a hard-fought win over the RoK's An Hyang-sik in the round of 16.
Facing Yape Gabriel Derick in the gold medal match, Tuyet Sang registered 7 scoring strikes, including three headshots, and successfully blocked three attacks. However, her opponent landed 21 scoring kicks, securing the gold for the Philippines.
Virtual taekwondo debuted at AISIA 20 as a next-generation sport merging traditional martial arts with advanced virtual reality. Competitors wear VR headsets and body sensors that track real-time limb movements in a 3D digital arena without physical contact.
Matches operate under a combat video game format, where athletes score points based on strike precision and difficulty, particularly headshots, within a best-of-three 90-second round format.
