Team K90 recovers 10 Vietnamese fallen soldiers’ remains in Cambodia
VOV.VN - Team K90, a unit under Military Region 9’s Political Department, and Cambodian authorities have recently recovered the remains of 10 Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who died in Cambodia during wartime.
Under the plan to search for, recover and repatriate the remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who died in Cambodia, Phase 26 of the 2026-2027 dry season, officers and soldiers of Team K90 have urgently deployed forces and coordinated with Cambodian authorities to survey areas, collect information and verify locations suspected of containing martyrs’ graves.
After more than two weeks of operations, the team surveyed and conducted excavations at eight locations across seven communes in Khsach Kandal district of Kandal province and Kampong Tralach district of Kampong Chhnang province.
The search resulted in the recovery of 10 sets of martyrs’ remains, including eight in Kandal province and two in Kampong Chhnang province.
Lieutenant Colonel La Phu Huy, commander of Team K90, said the unit had proactively completed preparations, focused on reviewing and gathering information on martyrs’ graves in Cambodia, and arranged personnel and equipment suited to each area.
According to the commander, Cambodia is currently experiencing frequent rainfall, prompting Team K90 to prioritise excavation work in hilly areas and on higher ground. Its officers and soldiers have worked to overcome difficulties and remain determined to fulfil the targets set under the 500-day campaign.
Since the beginning of the 2026-2027 dry season, Team K90 has recovered the remains of 23 Vietnamese martyrs in Vietnam and Cambodia.
In the coming period, Team K90 hopes to receive further information from veterans and historical witnesses about Vietnamese fallen soldiers and their graves in Kandal and Kampong Chhnang provinces.
Information about where the soldiers died, their original burial sites, battles in which they fought and their military units is an important basis for the team to review and narrow down search areas, thereby improving the effectiveness of efforts to recover martyrs’ remains in the time ahead.
The 500-day campaign to accelerate the search, recovery and identification of martyrs’ remains was launched nationwide on March 15, 2026, and will run until July 27, 2027. The campaign covers searches in Vietnam as well as the recovery and repatriation of the remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who died in Laos and Cambodia. It aims to accelerate the search for around 7,000 sets of remains, expand DNA testing and build a genetic database to support the identification of martyrs.
