VOV.VN - The northern province of Lao Cai has recovered 90 sets of fallen soldiers’ remains with eight of them identified during the 500-day campaign to accelerate the search, recovery and identification of war martyrs’ remains.

The province has mobilised its political system, armed forces and local communities to carry out a range of tasks, from reviewing records and clearing bombs and unexploded ordnance to searching for remains, collecting biological samples and conducting DNA identification.

So far, 1,250 graves have been excavated, 820 biological samples collected and 3,115 DNA samples obtained from relatives of martyrs whose identities remain unknown. Of the 71 sets of remains laid to rest at the ceremony on September 30, 16 were eligible for DNA sampling, while two had been identified.

The results were highlighted at a ceremony held at the Monument to Heroes and Martyrs in Cam Duong Ward, where provincial authorities organised a memorial service, commemoration and burial for the 71 sets of remains recovered from communes and wards across Lao Cai Province.

Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra, Secretary of the Party Central Committee and head of the National Steering Committee for the Search, Recovery and Identification of Fallen Soldiers’ Remains, attended the ceremony.

At the event, Vice Chairman of the Lao Cai Provincial People’s Committee Giang Quoc Hung noted the search and identification of fallen soldiers’ remains is both a sacred responsibility and a profound expression of gratitude to those who had sacrificed their lives for national independence and defence.

He said the province would continue efforts to identify those whose names remain unknown, with the highest sense of responsibility and determination.

Following the ceremony, 45 sets of remains were transferred to the Martyrs’ Cemetery in Cam Duong Ward, while 26 were laid to rest at the Martyrs’ Cemetery in Bao Thang Commune, alongside their comrades and under the care of local authorities and residents.
