Vietnam's No. 5 Engineering Unit departs for UN peacekeeping mission in Abyei
VOV.VN - A send-off ceremony was held in Hanoi on September 25 for Vietnam's No. 5 Engineering Unit heading to the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA).
Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Truong Thang, Member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Minister of National Defence, and Head of the Ministry of National Defence Steering Committee on Participation in United Nations Peacekeeping Operations, presided over the event.
Affirming that UN peacekeeping participation constitutes an honorable duty entrusted by the Party, State, and military, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Truong Thang applauded the profound marks left by preceding Vietnamese engineering contingents in the region. He instructed the entire 184-member unit to build upon past achievements, uphold solidarity, overcome hardships, and successfully execute assigned duties, thereby promoting the image of "Uncle Ho's soldiers" and the Vietnam People's Army globally.
Thang emphasized that personnel must maintain steadfast political mettle, absolute loyalty to the Party, the Fatherland, and the citizenry, alongside proactive initiative and self-reliance.
Commanders at all levels must strictly enforce discipline, maintain operational routines, and promptly remove emerging hurdles to safeguard mission quality and efficiency, he stressed.
The contingent comprises 184 officers and staff mobilized from the Air Defence - Air Force, the Navy, military zones, corps, arms, and the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations.
Prior to departure, the unit completed comprehensive training programs covering specialized engineering, foreign languages, medical support, logistics, force protection, international humanitarian law, and explosive ordnance awareness.
Notably, officers and soldiers of the unit packed four Vietnamese bamboo plants and West Lake lotus seeds in their baggage to cultivate at the Abyei base. These additions serve both as environmental protection measures aligned with United Nations guidelines and as living symbols of Vietnam's resilient spirit and cultural values on the African continent.
