Vietnamese officers assigned to UN peacekeeping missions in South Sudan and Abyei
VOV.VN - Senior Lieutenant General Phung Si Tan, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army (VPA), has presented the President’s decisions to two military officers assigned to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) at a ceremony held in Hanoi on August 10.
Captain Nguyen Ngoc Anh from the Vietnam Peacekeeping Department was appointed as a Logistics Staff Officer at UNISFA. Meanwhile, Captain Nguyen Van Nam, Deputy Commander of Company 1 under the Chemical Arms Corps, was assigned as a Military Observer at UNMISS. Both officers are scheduled to deploy in August 2026.
Speaking at the event, Senior Lieutenant General Phung Si Tan praised the achievements of the VPA in UN peacekeeping operations over the past 12 years, emphasizing that successive generations of Vietnamese personnel have overcome challenges to fulfill their international duties and elevate the nation's international prestige. Expressing confidence in the two officers, he urged them to uphold military traditions and applauded the Vietnam Peacekeeping Department alongside relevant agencies for their thorough preparation.
According to Colonel Pham Tan Phong, Deputy Director of the Vietnam Peacekeeping Department, both officers were rigorously selected based on political integrity, professional capacity, foreign language proficiency, and physical fitness.
Captain Nguyen Ngoc Anh previously served as an Administrative Officer at the Level-2 Field Hospital No. 4 at UNMISS during the 2022-2023 tenure, while Captain Nguyen Van Nam completed specialized training for military observers.
Both have completed pre-deployment training in Vietnam and abroad, focusing on UN peacekeeping expertise, multinational skills, and field safety to perform independent duties at the missions.
Representing the two officers, Captain Nguyen Van Nam affirmed that they will continuously study, train, adapt to field conditions, and uphold the honor and image of the Vietnam People's Army while fulfilling their duties at the UN missions.
