Vietnamese officer appointed to senior UN peacekeeping mission post for first time
VOV.VN - Vietnam’s Ministry of National Defence on July 3 announced the deployment of three military officers to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, including the first Vietnamese officer to be appointed to a senior position at a United Nations peacekeeping mission.
Among the three officers, Senior Colonel Luong Truong Vinh will serve as Senior Liaison Officer and Head of the Military Observer Office at UNMISS.
The appointment marks the first time a Vietnamese military officer has been chosen by the United Nations for a senior-level position at a UN peacekeeping mission.
Luong Truong Vinh, deputy head of a field operations unit under the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations, previously served in the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic and UNMISS missions.
He was also the first Vietnamese officer selected to work at UN Headquarters in New York City, where he served as a planning officer in the Office of Military Affairs under the Department of Peace Operations from August 2020 to August 2024.
Also deployed are Captain Nguyen Huy Hoang, who will replace Lieutenant Colonel Le Minh Thao as a military observer, and Captain Do Tran The Anh, who will also serve as a military observer, replacing Major Tran Viet Cuong.
The three officers were chosen from the General Department of Logistics and Technical Services, the Border Guard Command and the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations, and have completed pre-deployment and specialized peacekeeping training in Vietnam and abroad.
Speaking at the ceremony in Hanoi, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Truong Thang, Deputy Minister of National Defence, congratulated the three officers and hailed the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations and relevant agencies for preparing personnel for deployment.
He said the United Nations’ continued confidence in assigning Vietnam to key peacekeeping roles recognized the capability, professionalism and contributions of Vietnam’s peacekeeping forces to international peace and security.
During the event, certificates of merit were also awarded to officers who completed ASEAN observer duties, while two additional personnel were assigned to Cambodia to replace Vietnam’s contingent in the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT).
After more than 12 years of participation in UN peacekeeping operations, Vietnam’s Ministry of National Defence has deployed nearly 1,400 military personnel to UN peacekeeping missions, UN Headquarters and the UN Liaison Office in Belgium.
Engineer Team No. 5 and Level-2 Field Hospital No. 8 are currently undergoing training and preparations for rotational deployment in September 2026.
At the same time, the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations is coordinating with relevant agencies to prepare Engineer Team No. 6 and Level-2 Field Hospital No. 9 for deployment in 2027.
