VOV.VN - Vietnam and Thailand have concurred to push for the practical implementation of their "Three Connects" Strategy to deepen economic ties, Prime Minister Le Minh Hung and President of the National Assembly of Thailand Sophon Zaram affirmed during their meeting in Hanoi on August 6.

The meeting took place as the two nations mark the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations (August 6, 1976 - August 6, 2026), contributing to consolidating political trust and carrying the Vietnam-Thailand Comprehensive Strategic Partnership forward.

During the talks, PM Hung emphasized that Thailand is a close neighbour and key regional partner sharing core strategic interests with Vietnam. He said both nations work closely to uphold ASEAN’s centrality, promote Mekong sub-regional cooperation, and contribute to regional peace and stability. He praised the Thai parliament's role in bilateral ties and expressed confidence that the visit will create fresh impetus for legislative cooperation and high-level agreements.

Expressing his pleasure on his first official visit to Vietnam, President Sophon Zaram praised Vietnam’s socio-economic progress and recent administrative streamlining, noting Thailand's interest in referencing Vietnam's experience. He expressed confidence in the strong growth of bilateral relations, following top-level exchange visits earlier this year.

Host and guest expressed satisfaction with the progress across various fields under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, particularly in defence, security, trade, investment, science, technology, education, and tourism. They consented to maintain high-level contacts, effectively operate mechanisms such as the Joint Cabinet Retreat, and carry out the 2026-2031 Action Plan.

In security, both sides committed to maintaining defense mechanisms, stepping up maritime security and border management, tackling cross-border crime, and ensuring neither country allows any entity to use its territory against the other.

On economic cooperation, they agreed to speed up the practical implementation of the "Three Connects" Strategy by strengthening linkages across supply chains, local businesses, and sustainable development plans. They pledged to make effective use of the East-West and Southern Economic Corridors, expand road, air, and sea transport connectivity, and encourage mutual investment. The two sides are set to effectively utilize mechanisms from the Vietnam-Thailand Joint Trade Committee to elevate bilateral trade to US$25 billion and eventually US$50 billion in a balanced and sustainable manner.

PM Hung suggested that the two legislative bodies step up delegation exchanges, share legislative expertise, and support local business ties. He also asked Thailand to continue offer optimal conditions for the Vietnamese community living in the country to settle down and contribute to local development as well as bilateral relations.

Exchanging views on regional and international issues, the leaders agreed to maintain close coordination at multilateral forums and Mekong sub-regional mechanisms to reinforce ASEAN unity and its central role.

They reaffirmed ASEAN's common stance on the East Sea, emphasizing peace, stability, security, safety, and freedom of navigation and aviation based on international law and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982).

Both leaders expressed confidence that with strong political determination and close coordination, the Vietnam-Thailand Comprehensive Strategic Partnership will continue to grow steadily, benefiting the people of both countries and contributing to peace, stability, and growth in the region and the world.
