Party and State leader proposes expanding trade, investment with Côte d'Ivoire
VOV.VN - Party General Secretary and State President To Lam suggested that Vietnam and Côte d'Ivoire diversify their import-export portfolio beyond traditional products like raw cashew nuts and rice, while receiving President of the National Assembly (NA) of Côte d’Ivoire Patrick Achi in Hanoi on August 24.
Welcoming Achi on his official visit from August 23-26, 2026, the first by the head of an African legislature during the 16th National Assembly tenure, To Lam highlighted that Côte d'Ivoire became Vietnam's largest trading partner in Africa in 2025.
To achieve balanced two-way trade, the top Vietnamese leader called on both nations to step up delegation exchanges, share legislative experience, and establish mechanisms to exchange trade and investment policies.
He asked Côte d'Ivoire to offer favorable conditions for Vietnamese enterprises to invest in high-potential sectors, including agriculture, telecommunications, oil and gas, digital transformation, cybersecurity, mineral and agricultural processing, civil infrastructure, seaports, urban development, and electric vehicles (EVs).
In response, National Assembly President Patrick Achi hailed Vietnam's development achievements after 40 years of Doi Moi (Renewal), calling it an inspiring model for African nations.
Recounting his talks with Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man, Achi expressed his desire for Côte d'Ivoire to become a destination for Vietnamese enterprises to invest and expand into the broader West African market. He proposed that the two parliaments establish a regular forum for dialogue and cooperation in processing industries, digital transformation, private investment, and human resource development.
On this occasion, Achi conveyed an invitation from Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara to Party General Secretary and State President To Lam to pay an official visit to Côte d'Ivoire.
To Lam accepted the invitation, while instructing the foreign ministries of both countries to arrange a suitable time for the visit.
