Vietnam-US trade talks near final outcome: USTR representative
VOV.VN - Vietnam-US negotiations for an agreement on reciprocal, fair and balanced trade have made significant progress and are nearing a final outcome, opening prospects for a stable, long-term framework for economic, trade and investment ties between the two countries.
The prospect of concluding the negotiations was discussed by US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President To Lam during their meeting in New York on September 21 (local time), as part of the leader’s working trip to the United States for the 81st session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 81).
Greer said the two negotiating teams had made considerable efforts and significant progress and were now close to a final outcome. He added that once signed and implemented, the agreement would open up further opportunities for cooperation between the two countries.
General Secretary and President To Lam welcomed the positive results achieved by the two sides and called for the agreement to be finalised soon, creating a stable, long-term framework for Vietnam-US economic, trade and investment relations.
He reaffirmed Vietnam’s importance attached to the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with the US and expressed his wish to work with the administration of President Donald Trump to develop bilateral ties in a stable, substantive, effective and sustainable manner.
Within the broader bilateral relationship, he described economic, trade and investment ties as one of its most important pillars, directly benefiting businesses and people in both countries.
Vietnam has therefore stepped up economic and trade cooperation, including increased purchases of US goods, with a view to achieving a more balanced trade relationship while generating more orders, jobs and benefits for businesses and workers on both sides, he said.
At the meeting, the Vietnamese leader also called on the US to take a comprehensive approach to outstanding trade issues, including those related to investigations under Section 301 of the US Trade Act of 1974.
Vietnam wishes to continue strengthening economic, trade and investment ties in a substantive manner that delivers benefits to people in both countries, he told Greer.
Alongside efforts to address outstanding trade issues, the two countries are seeking to maintain the momentum of bilateral ties and create greater room for economic and investment activities in the period ahead.
