Vietnam, Japan expand cooperation in education, science and technology
VOV.VN - Vietnam and Japan are expanding cooperation in education, science and technology, with a focus on high-quality talent training, semiconductors, artificial intelligence and health care.
The view was highlighted during a meeting in Tokyo on October 2 between Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Seki Yoshihiro and Vietnamese Minister of Science and Technology Vu Hai Quan as part of the latter’s working visit to Japan.
The two sides discussed specific measures to strengthen high-quality human resource training and postgraduate education, while expanding the Nexus programme on semiconductors and exploring cooperation in other emerging fields, including artificial intelligence (AI).
They also looked at opportunities to step up cooperation in health care and jointly organise major events on science and technology cooperation in the coming period.
Quan spoke highly of Japan’s support for Vietnam in education and science and technology, describing these areas as among the most successful fields of bilateral cooperation.
He noted that Japan had supported the training of tens of thousands of highly qualified Vietnamese PhD holders. The two countries had also developed numerous scientific and technological cooperation projects.
Building on these results, Quan called on Japan to continue providing scholarships, supporting human resource training for strategic industries and promoting partnerships between Vietnamese and Japanese universities.
Semiconductors and AI among emerging areas of cooperation
For his part, Seki highlighted Vietnam’s role and position, expressing Japan’s determination to further advance bilateral cooperation.
He affirmed that Vietnam is an important partner for Japan in realising its vision of a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, while science and technology has emerged as a new pillar of cooperation between the two countries.
Seki also highlighted progress in the Nexus programme on semiconductor cooperation, saying he was pleased that the two sides could continue exchanging views on future areas of collaboration.
The semiconductor programme is among the emerging areas of cooperation between Vietnam and Japan, with both sides placing growing emphasis on human resource development and high-tech industries.
Also on October 2, Minister of Science and Technology Vu Hai Quan met with Japanese Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications Fujii Hisayuki, visited FPT Japan and took part in other activities during his working visit.
According to the Ministry of Science and Technology, the visit forms part of efforts to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in education, science, technology and innovation between the two countries.
The NEXUS programme, or Networked Exchange, United Strength for Stronger Partnerships between Japan and ASEAN, is a Japanese initiative aimed at strengthening sustainable research cooperation and co-creating innovation with ASEAN countries.
Under Japan-Vietnam cooperation, the programme is expected to support the training of semiconductor researchers, with Japan planning to accept a total of about 250 Vietnamese doctoral students in the field. The initiative contributes to Vietnam’s goal of training 500 PhD holders in semiconductors and is part of broader efforts to strengthen research collaboration and human resource development between the two countries.
