VOV.VN - Construction is shifting into high gear on major infrastructure projects across Phu Quoc Island for the APEC 2027 Economic Leaders' Week. From the expanded airport and light rail transit line to arterial roads, the convention center, and the multipurpose performance venue, numerous components are taking shape ahead of completion in 2027.
One year into construction, key infrastructure and venue projects for the APEC 2027 Economic Leaders' Week on Phu Quoc Island are rapidly taking shape. Projects spanning airport upgrades, urban rail transit, road networks, and conference and performance facilities are being simultaneously accelerated, targeting completion ahead of and during 2027.Phu Quoc International Airport is undergoing a major expansion, covering approximately 1,050 hectares. Phase 1 of the project aims to increase capacity to serve 20-24 million passengers annually by 2030, positioning the airport as one of Vietnam's major aviation center. The terminal building is entering its finishing phase, with workers focusing on glass curtain wall installation and roof completion. Inside, interior fittings, decorative ceilings, and technical systems are being installed across multiple levels. As of September 2026, concrete structural work for the main terminal building is approximately 95% complete, masonry and interior finishing have reached about 95%, and the baggage handling system is 60% complete. Phase 1 of the project is scheduled to open in April 2027.The terminal's overall architecture is inspired by the imagery of a rising fire phoenix, symbolizing rebirth, vitality, and the spirit of the "era of national rise."Part of the Phu Quoc Airport expansion project, the VIP terminal spans 9,890 square meters of floor space on a 5.3-hectare site. Inspired by the imagery of a sea eagle, the facility is designed to accommodate delegations led by heads of state of up to 300 people. The roof of the VIP terminal is largely complete, while interior brickwork and plastering are being expedited.Mai Dinh Khoa, a construction supervisor for the project, says interior brickwork and plastering are expected to be largely finished in October 2026. The roof was completed in September, while all interior fittings, technical systems, and operating equipment are scheduled for completion in March 2027, ensuring the facility is ready ahead of the APEC 2027 Economic Leaders' Week.If the airport is the gateway, the 17.59-kilometer light rail transit (LRT) line serves as the artery connecting Phu Quoc International Airport to the southern APEC conference center area. Running along the median strip of provincial road DT.975, the entire line features six stations whose architecture is inspired by the cultural characteristics of Vietnam's northern, central, and southern regions.Construction work on bridges, tunnels, and roadbeds is underway simultaneously. The project is entering the rail-laying stage for several sections. According to the plan, the light rail transit line in Phu Quoc, An Giang province, aims to complete test runs by July 2027 and commence commercial operations in November 2027.Running parallel to the LRT line is provincial road DT.975, designated as one of Phu Quoc's vital north-south transport corridors. By September 2026, the route's alignment has taken clear shape. The project targets completion and commissioning in the second quarter of 2027.Running parallel to the LRT line is provincial road DT.975, designated as one of Phu Quoc's vital north-south transport corridors. As of September 2026, the route is taking clear shape. The project targets completion and commissioning in the second quarter of 2027.Considered the centerpiece of the APEC 2027 complex, the APEC Convention and Exhibition Center boasts a total floor area of 153,130 square meters and a height of 39.25 meters, comprising one basement level, three above-ground stories, and a technical rooftop. The facility features an 11,050-square-meter ballroom with a column-free span of up to 81 meters. The center's roof system is designed to mimic layers of ocean waves.On-site observations show that the building's structural frame and roof are nearing completion, gradually enclosing the structure. According to the plan, the exterior will be finished in the fourth quarter of 2026, and the interior is slated for completion by March 31, 2027.At the construction site, reinforced concrete structural work for the APEC multi-purpose performance hall has reached nearly 100%. Engineers and workers are focusing on installing 50 roof support columns and completing interior items. According to the plan, the facility's exterior will be accomplished in the fourth quarter of 2026, followed by interior completion, with a target finish date of March 30, 2027.
From a major road corridor to an integrated transport axis combining roads, light rail and connections to air and sea gateways, Phu Quoc is accelerating the development of multimodal infrastructure as it prepares to host APEC 2027, while laying the groundwork for longer-term growth.
