Hanoi has been entering the most extreme hot days of the summer so far. Outdoor temperatures have climbed above 39-40°C over the past few days. Each day the air is noticeably hot and stuffy from 6-7 a.m. onwards.

As midday approaches, temperatures continue to rise, with temperatures on the streets in reality hovering around 43-46°C due to the strong heat absorption and radiation from the concrete and road surfaces.

Under the scorching heat, many outdoor workers still have to struggle to make a living.

From ride-hailing motorbike drivers and delivery drivers to street vendors and porters, everyone is directly affected by the prolonged heatwave, significantly impacting their health, productivity, and daily lives.

The intense heatwave also becomes a major burden on the lives of workers, especially those who work outdoors for long hours continuously.

A delivery driver comes up with a temporary shelter using a hand-made umbrella attached to his vehicle, aiming to reduce the direct impact of sunlight and protect the goods.

In wet markets, street vendors persistently endure the scorching sun to make a living.

Nguyen Thi Hoai, a street vendor, says the prolonged heat has taken a toll on her health, especially around midday. Despite the exhaustion, she still has to keep selling to make a living. The intense heat also causes fruits to spoil more quickly, making business even harder.

Many sanitation workers continue working outdoors for hours under the scorching sun, wearing protective clothing, jackets, and face coverings to shield themselves from the heat while carrying out their duties.

For many informal workers, the heat not only makes work more difficult but also adds pressure to make ends meet.

Doctors warn that prolonged hot weather can pose serious health risks, especially to outdoor workers. Dehydration can easily lead to heatstroke, heat exhaustion, and low blood pressure if not treated promptly. People are advised to drink enough water and stay hydrated to avoid serious health complications.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, Hanoi is expected to continue experiencing hot weather in a couple of days. People are advised to limit outdoor activities unless absolutely necessary and take proactive measures to protect their health.
