In the aftermath of severe flash floods in Muong Than commune on July 17 climing seven lives, many families have been forced to leave their homes and move to temporary shelters for safety.

Amid concerns over the complex evolution of flash floods and landslide risks, more than 800 residents of Noong Thang village have moved to a temporary shelter at the Pac Ta Primary and Secondary School in Pac Ta commune.

Classrooms have been transformed into temporary shelters for hundreds of flood evacuees. Desks and chairs are cleared away to make space for bedding, clothing, and other essential belongings.

Each classroom accommodates 15 to 20 people. Beyond the classrooms, the teachers' quarters and student dormitories have also been converted into temporary shelters to accommodate all evacuated households.

After the initial hours of uncertainty and upheaval, life at the temporary shelter has gradually begun to stabilise. Residents are adjusting to their new reality with the support of local authorities and community members.

Lo Van Cay, a resident of Noong Thang village, says the flash floods had swept away his house and livestock, forcing him and his wife to flee with their children, leaving all of their belongings behind. Unable to return home for a week, he hopes the floodwaters will recede soon so his family and other villagers can return home.

As residents continue to face the challenges of recovering from the disaster, support from local communities has become a vital source of encouragement, helping them regain stability while awaiting the opportunity to return home.

Emergency relief supplies have been delivered promptly to evacuation sites, providing affected residents with essential necessities.

To deliver relief supplies to the local people as quickly as possible, the volunteer team have traveled over 300 km from Hanoi to the flooding areas. “We hope that these gifts will bring warmth and assist flood victims to overcome difficulties," says a representative of the volunteer team.

At the same time, community kitchens have been operating around the clock, preparing and distributing freshly cooked meals to people displaced by the floods.

Nguyen Hai Yen, a teacher at Tan Uyen Primary School No. 2, says the community kitchen has been operating for several days. To avoid disrupting classes, local schools take turns assigning six or seven teachers each day to prepare meals for residents displaced by the floods.

From preparing ingredients and cooking to packaging and handing out meals, volunteers have carried out every task with dedication and compassion.

During peak periods, this kitchen serves approximately 2,000 meals daily through the collaborative efforts of school staff, teachers, residents, and volunteer groups, ensuring that all evacuees receive safe and nutritious meals.

Beyond meeting people's daily nutritional needs, these simple meals also symbolise the care, solidarity and encouragement extended by communities to those affected by the disaster.

School desks and chairs are pushed together to form communal dining tables, where hundreds of evacuees gather for meals during this difficult time.

Thanks to the combined efforts of local authorities, emergency responders, donors, and volunteer groups from across the country, life at the temporary shelters is gradually returning to normal.

What the evacuees long for most is for the floodwaters to recede so they can return home and begin rebuilding their lives.
