Phong Nha-Ke Bang among UNESCO's 14 new biosphere reserves

VOV.VN - UNESCO has added 14 new biosphere reserves to its World Network of Biosphere Reserves, including Vietnam's Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. The newly designated sites not only safeguard rich biodiversity but also promote sustainable development by balancing environmental conservation with human activities.

Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, home to one of Asia's oldest and largest karst formations, is among 14 new biosphere reserves added to UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere Reserves. The park features vast tropical forests, limestone mountains and ancient cave systems, providing habitat for nearly 3,000 plant and animal species, including many endemic to Vietnam.

Phong Nha Cave at the national park is known for its remarkable natural features, including one of the world's longest underground rivers, a vast cave entrance, spectacular stalactites and expansive sandbanks and rock formations. These distinctive characteristics have earned it international recognition.

The caves are surrounded by scenic rivers, towering limestone mountains and lush primary forests, creating a landscape that highlights the area's rich natural heritage and makes it a popular destination for nature lovers. (Photo of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park)
