Vietnamese fishermen earn big from mussel farming

VOV.VN -In modern times, mussel farming provides a good chance for many Vietnamese fishermen in Cam Lam District located in Khanh Hoa province to earn a living.
After flash flooding hit the area, large numbers of local fishermen are flocking to the Thuy Trieu Swamp to seek out mussels rather than going fishing.
According to local people, mussel hunting gives fisherman the chance to raise income by between VND500,000 to VND 1 million per household.
Nguyen Thi Yen, a female mussel hunter, said she and her husband are able to catch between 1.8 tonnes and 2 tonnes of mussels each day with a selling price of between VND5,000 to VND6,000 per kg.
The couple earns VND900,000 to VND1.2 million per day from hunting mussels, 2.5 times higher than their earnings from fishing.
The fishermen usually go hunting from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. After being cleaned, the mussels are packed into the styrofoam boxes and sold to buyers.
The buyers then resell them to shrimp feed businesses at a profit.
