London Symphony Orchestra returns to Hanoi for landmark concert

VOV.VN - The London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) is set to perform at Ho Guom Opera in Hanoi on October 2 and 3, led by Chief Conductor Sir Antonio Pappano in the Vietnam Airlines Classic – Hanoi Concert 2026.

The orchestra will open the concert with Vietnam’s national anthem before performing three major works spanning different musical styles and periods, namely Anatoly Lyadov’s The Enchanted Lake, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5.

The programme was previewed by Pappano at a press meeting in Hanoi on the morning of October 2, where he was joined by the LSO’s new Managing Director and Vietnamese music composer Quoc Trung.

For Pappano, the Hanoi programme forms part of the LSO’s current Asian tour, which features four different programmes across the region. The repertoire presented in Hanoi differs from that performed in China and Japan, with the Vietnamese concerts featuring violinist Benjamin Marquise Gilmore and violist Eivind Ringstad as soloists.

Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante will bring Gilmore and Ringstad together with the LSO, before Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 concludes the programme. The three works offer contrasting musical colours, from Lyadov’s atmospheric The Enchanted Lake to Mozart’s elegant dialogue between violin and viola and the powerful dramatic arc of Tchaikovsky’s symphony.

Pappano also expressed his excitement about returning to Ho Guom Opera, where he and the orchestra previously performed. The return visit gives the LSO another opportunity to perform for Hanoi audiences in one of the city’s leading concert venues.

The LSO will perform at Ho Guom Opera on October 2 and 3, with both concerts scheduled to begin at 8pm.

Beyond the main performances, the Vietnam Airlines Classic – Hanoi Concert 2026 will feature community activities designed to bring artists closer to audiences and music lovers. The programme will particularly encourage young people to engage with symphonic music, meet international musicians and gain a closer look at the people behind the performances.

According to composer Quoc Trung, preparations for this year’s concert began shortly after the LSO’s performance in Hanoi last year. He said the two sides had worked closely to prepare the programme and meet the orchestra’s exacting artistic standards.

The return of the LSO also highlights the growing role of Hanoi as a destination for major international classical music performances, bringing one of the world’s best-known orchestras back to the capital with a programme that combines major works from the classical and romantic repertoires.
