Steam train planned for trial run on Hue-Da Nang route in October
VOV.VN - A steam-powered train is expected to undergo a trial run on the Hue-Da Nang route in October 2026, offering a new railway tourism experience centred on Hai Van Pass scenery and the nostalgia of historic train journeys.
The proposal was discussed at a meeting on September 17 between leaders Hue City and Vietnam National Railway Group (VNR) on developing a steam train tourism product on the route.
The initiative is expected to add a new dimension to railway tourism along a route already known for its scenic landscapes, heritage sites and distinctive travel experiences.
Under the plan, the steam-powered train would offer visitors a different way to travel between Hue and Da Nang, particularly along the section crossing Hai Van Pass.
The two sides are also studying the possibility of arranging a stop in the Hai Van Pass area, giving passengers time to explore the surroundings, enjoy the scenery and take photographs.
A steam train travelling along the railway through Hai Van Pass would add another highlight to the journey, combining the landscapes of central Vietnam with an experience reminiscent of an earlier era of rail travel.
Alongside the proposed new product, Hue and VNR plan to develop more railway tourism experiences linked to heritage, landscapes, leisure, medical tourism and health and wellness. The aim is to diversify visitor experiences and strengthen links between tourism services in Hue.
Earlier, the Central Heritage tourist train service, jointly operated by VNR and the authorities of Da Nang and Hue, began service on March 26, 2024. The journey takes about three hours and passes through Hai Van Pass. The carriages combine modern design with elements inspired by traditional royal court aesthetics, while passengers can enjoy cultural performances and Central Vietnamese specialities during the journey.
