Vietnamese players grab four medals at IPCA World Chess Championship
VOV.VN - Vietnamese players have earned one gold, one silver and two bronze medals at the 24th World Chess Championship of the International Physically Disabled Chess Association (IPCA) that was wrapped up in Goboa, India, on July 31.
Tran Thi Bich Thuy delivered a stellar performance, securing the gold medal in the blitz chess in the women’s wheelchair category with 5 points from 9 games. She also claimed a silver medal in the standard chess and a bronze in the rapid chess, both in the same category.
Meanwhile, Doan Thu Huyen won a bronze medal in the blitz chess for women with physical disabilities, scoring 5.5 points, and finished fourth in the standard chess.
Head coach Bui Quang Vu praised the team’s performance, noting that the results lived up to the coaching staff’s expectations. He added that adjustments would be made to help the players achieve even better results in upcoming international tournaments.
This year’s tournament featured 97 players from 18 countries, including Russia, Israel, Poland, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Germany, South Africa, Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirate among others. They competed in three formats - standard, rapid, and blitz chess, with the total prize pool of US$15,000.
