Vietnam claim convincing 2-0 win over Malaysia in ASEAN Cup semifinal first leg
VOV.VN - Vietnam secured a convincing 2-0 win over Malaysia in the first leg of the ASEAN Cup 2026 semifinal in Kuala Lumpur on August 16, taking a strong advantage into the return leg.
The team faced considerable pressure in the first half but broke the deadlock in the final minute. Tien Anh received the ball on the right and delivered a well-placed cross for Xuan Son to run onto and head home.
The Vietnamese side continued to perform well in the second half despite pressure from Malaysia and doubled its lead in the 86th minute. Quang Hai made a good move with the intention of playing Dinh Bac through, but Malaysian defender Faris Danish attempted to clear the ball and instead put it into his own net.
Speaking after the match, Vietnam’s head coach Kim Sang-sik said the team had faced a difficult away game but expressed his happiness with the 2-0 win.
“It was a difficult away game, but I am very happy that the team won 2-0. The result came from the players' best efforts and the way they gave everything on the pitch, and I would like to congratulate and sincerely thank them. There were also a large number of Vietnamese fans who made the trip to the stadium to passionately support the team. I sincerely thank everyone.”
“Despite the 2-0 win, the team still faced quite a few difficulties in adapting to the playing surface, while some tactical aspects did not work as smoothly as we would have liked. We will analyze these issues carefully and prepare better for the next match,” he added.
