Golden Stars win inaugural FIDE World Team Amateur Rapid Chess Cup
VOV.VN - Vietnam’s Golden Stars team claimed the title at the inaugural FIDE World Team Amateur Rapid Chess Cup in Hong Kong, China, in a notable achievement for Vietnamese amateur chess on the international stage.
The tournament was the first edition organised by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) exclusively for amateur rapid chess teams. Golden Stars produced an impressive performance throughout the tournament before advancing to the final against Mongolia’s Bosoo Noyon.
The championship match proved highly competitive, with the two teams tied after the regular games. The winner was ultimately decided in an Armageddon tiebreak on board one.
Bosoo Noyon chose to play with the black pieces despite having less time on the clock, as Black had draw odds under Armageddon rules. However, Mongolia’s top player was unable to capitalise on that advantage, allowing Golden Stars to secure the title.
According to FIDE, team captain That Nhu Tung said Golden Stars entered the tournament with the goal of enjoying the competition rather than focusing heavily on results.
“I am extremely happy with this result, especially because we came here simply to enjoy ourselves and make the most of every game,” Tung shared.
Chess in Vietnam has developed strongly at the amateur level, although the number of professional players remains limited. Parents had joined together to form a team made up of young players from different parts of the country, he continued.
“We believe this achievement will make headlines in Vietnam and help promote the development of chess in the country. Chess in Vietnam is especially strong at the amateur level, and we hope the amateur chess scene will continue to grow even further.”, he added.
Mongolia’s Bosoo Noyon finished runners-up, while host team Hong Kong Young Dragons placed third.
